Born and raised in Brazil, Mestre Bira developed a deep love for Capoeira at a young age. Growing up in Torres, Rio Grande do Sul and Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, he immersed himself in the rich cultural tapestry of his homeland and quickly mastered the intricate movements and rhythms of the art form. His early years were characterized by intense training and a deepening appreciation for the philosophy and history of Capoeira, which combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and martial arts. He received guidance from highly respected Capoeira Masters such as Mestre Peninha, Mestre Indio (do Mercado Modelo, Bahia) and Mestre Taina.

Global Travels and Training

Mestre Bira embarked on a global journey driven by a passion for learning and sharing his knowledge. He travelled extensively, training with renowned masters, participating in workshops, engaging in Capoeira rodas worldwide and fighting MMA.
These experiences honed his skills and enriched his understanding of Capoeira and other martial arts’ diverse expressions and their unifying power.

Establishing Roots in New Zealand

In 2008, Mestre Bira found a new home in Wellington, New Zealand. Recognizing the untapped potential for Capoeira in this vibrant city, he founded the first Resistência Group in New Zealand. His vision was to create a community where people could practice, celebrate, and preserve the art of Capoeira and other martial arts. Under his leadership, the group flourished, attracting students from all walks of life and fostering a spirit of inclusivity and resilience to this day.

Achieving the rank of Grand Master

Early 2024 marked a significant milestone in Mestre Bira’s illustrious career. During the Batizado and Troca de Cordas in Wellington, he obtained the white cord, signifying his new title of Grand Master. This prestigious rank reflects his technical mastery and his contributions to the Capoeira community worldwide during his lifetime. It recognizes his role as a mentor, Master, and leader who has inspired countless individuals through his dedication and expertise in many countries worldwide.

Teaching and Training at Mai Dojo - Wellington

He imparts his wisdom and skills in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Black Belt) and Capoeira here.
