Are You Preparing for the Batizado?

Excitement is in the air as we approach the Batizado e Troca de Cordas event in Wellington from January 31st to February 2nd, 2025!
This event is one of the most anticipated highlights of the year, bringing together capoeiristas from across New Zealand and around the world. Over three days, we’ll experience engaging workshops, lively rodas, music sessions, and social gatherings that showcase the essence and energy of Capoeira.

For those new to our Marlborough Capoeira family, welcome!
Whether you’ve just joined us or have been training for a while, you’re part of a supportive, vibrant group. The Batizado is not just for experienced capoeiristas; it’s for everyone. New members are warmly encouraged to attend, participate, and soak up the incredible experience. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with Grand Master Bira, Contra Mestres, Professores, and fellow capoeiristas of all levels.

What Is the Batizado?

For those unfamiliar, the Batizado e Troca de Cordas is a celebration where students receive their first cord (for beginners) or move up in rank (for more experienced practitioners). This event honours our dedication to Capoeira, marking each student’s skill, understanding, and spirit growth. It’s a chance to celebrate your progress, meet new friends, have fun and learn from some of the most skilled and passionate capoeiristas.

The Importance of Preparation and Consistency

Preparing for the Batizado involves more than attending the event itself; it’s about what you bring to it. Regular training at Marlborough Girls' College in Blenheim is where your journey begins. Showing up consistently, joining rodas, participating in music classes, and embracing the broader cultural elements of Capoeira are all essential to your growth.

For our new members, this is your time to immerse yourself in this Martial Art, enjoy learning, and take those first steps in building your Capoeira foundation. Remember that it’s okay to be at the beginning of your journey; every capoeirista started where you are now.

What It Takes to Earn Your Corda

Dedication throughout the year is vital to receiving your cord at the Batizado. Here’s what we look for:

  1. Regular Attendance: Consistent attendance in class shows commitment. It’s the bedrock of your training and helps you build strength and technique.

  2. Active Participation: Joining rodas and training with others tests your skills and deepens your understanding of Capoeira’s dynamic nature. It’s where you learn resilience and adaptability.

  3. Dedication to Learning: Capoeira is more than just movements. Embrace learning the music, the history, and the stories that shape our practice. Your curiosity and growth as a student are just as important as your physical abilities.

Keep the Spirit High!

As the Batizado approaches, stay motivated and remember why you started Capoeira in the first place. Celebrate each training session as progress, no matter how small. This journey is about growth, community, and enjoying the process as you move toward earning your cord.

For our new capoeiristas: don’t worry if you’re not aiming for a cord this year. Attending the Batizado will still be an enriching experience full of learning and inspiration. You’ll leave with a deeper connection to Capoeira and an understanding of what it means to be part of this incredible community.

Let’s continue to support, train purposefully, and lift each other. The effort you put in today will echo in your movement, your confidence, and your growth as a capoeirista. Come to Wellington, bring your enthusiasm, and let’s make this event memorable for everyone!

Axé to all, and remember: you are welcome, and you are part of this journey.
